7: Traffic

Getting traffic is not as difficult as it sounds. Getting quality traffic, however, is a different matter.

If you optimise your site properly, you will get targeted search engine traffic. Of course you can also buy search engine traffic via the pay-per-click system...this can be very costly though, and choosing the proper search terms to bid on is such a complicated business that it falls outside the scope of this tutorial.

Buying traffic.
There are many traffic sellers and resellers. Many will sell you junk. In my opinion there are only two sources that are worthwhile: Choker and TrafficHolder.com - Buy and Sell Traffic

6: Optimise

As I've mentioned, search engine optimisation should actually be an integral part of your site design, that will save a lot of headaches afterwards. However, I will dedicate a separate section to SEO.

Optimising is actually pretty easy, if you know what you're doing. Don't go out and buy Webposition Gold or any of those other services that guarantee you top placement. It's a waste of money, and if you do it properly you will get the same (or even better) results.
A free tool that I like very much and use extensively is the online Meta Tag Analyzer Tool from Widexl. By checking your page with it, you can easily and quickly optimise it. It lists all the keywords found on your page, making it very easy to make your keywords relevant to the page.

Lets start off with the basic tags every well-optimised page should have. These are the ones I use: (I have replaced the square brackets by "{" and "}", or blogger won't display them)

{TITLE}Put your title here{/TITLE}
{META NAME="Keywords" CONTENT="separate, by, commas"}
{META NAME="Description" CONTENT="description goes here"}
{META NAME="Robots" CONTENT="ALL,Index,Follow"}
{META NAME="Distribution" CONTENT="Global"}
{META NAME="Revisit-After" CONTENT="30 Days"}
{META NAME="Rating" CONTENT="Mature"}
{META NAME="MSSmartTagsPreventParsing" CONTENT="True"}

The Title tag: Make sure that it fits the content of your site. Use keywords from your site's content. If you have the title from the actual page in your title tag, you're almost assured of 100% relevancy.

The Keyword tag: Don't put in keywords that aren't actually on your page. Sounds simple, but many people think that by putting "free porn" or "Paris Hilton"in their keywords they'll get more hits. They might, but only if there is actually free porn or pics of Paris Hilton on the site :)

The Description tag: Another no-brainer, really. If you have a line of text on your page describing the content, and you put it in the description tag, you should get 100% relevancy.

I don't feel like explaining what the other tags do right now, just put them in :)

4: Hosting

Do NOT host your site on Geocities.
Do NOT host your site on Angelfire.
Do NOT host your site on the free space provided by your ISP.
If you read the Terms Of Service of the sponsors you should know this, but I'm going to repeat it anyway.

Get a proper adult host. Not just any host, but a host that allows adult content...not every professional host does.
After trying many hosts, some very expensive, some terribly inefficient, some totally worthless, I'm now using www.dreamhost.com. They are excellent and affordable. They have plans starting from $7.95 per month: 20 GB of diskspace, 1 TB of bandwidth. If you start off by using only free hosted galleries, you'll never exceed that.

When I started off initially I used a free adult host. Free hosts are NOT free though. Sure, you don't pay them, but they put their banners and links along the top and/or bottom of your page. The top and bottom of the page are your prime spots, so in this way they leach off a substantial amount of your traffic. Nevertheless I made enough sales in the first month to graduate to a real paid host afterwards.

There are also some sponsors that provide you with bannerless free hosting. The drawback here is that you are only allowed to promote their sites from their free hosting.

Domain names:
A good domain name can make or break a site. Don't register your domain names just anywhere though. Some domain registrars are ridiculously expensive. I use GoDaddy.com. They are cheap and fast.

3: Pick a sponsor

I've signed up with hundreds of sponsors. Through trial and error I've narrowed it down to the ones that work for me, and are trustworthy...there are many fly-by-night companies out there, some will rip you off, or disappear overnight...this has happened to me countless times. Worse than not being paid, is the endless amount of work it takes to go through all your sites and remove all links to the offending company...it can take days. I'll give you the list of sponsors I use, and that make me money...no guarantee that they'll work for you, but at least you can be sure they won't rip you off. Always read the Terms of Service carefully...a bit of a pain in the ass, but better to be prepared.

  1. FlashCash

    I use them mainly for their voyeur sites (Sexspy, Fuckspy, Dude Dorm, VoyeurDorm, Spycams, Upskirts and Wives Exposed) and for their celeb sites (MrSkin and Nitro Celebs)
    Their free trial program is the easiest to sell and pays out $20 per pop.
    Instant payouts via ePassporte. Very cool...seconds after a sale, you have the money in your account. If you don't have an ePassporte account, you can request one from Flashcash. This is the way I did it. The cost of the hard card ($35) is deducted from your flashcash earnings.

  2. CamSense

    My favorite webcam program. Pays you a percentage of what members spend. Starts off slowly, but once you have enough members signed up via your link, generates a nice steady income. I have about 150 members at the moment, and that's good for about $25 per day, on average. Pays out bi-weekly by check.

  3. Pussycash

    I use them mainly for their webcam program (ImLive) and their dating program (Wildmatch)
    Awesome program, pays $32 per signup, during promos up to $100 per signup. They have great competitions as well, I almost won a brand-new Porsche last month :)
    Pays out bi-weekly via check or ePassporte.

  4. CyberErotica

    The big daddy of online porn. Over 60 sites in various niches to choose from. The easiest to sell are the 4free programs: Teenmail4Free, Riskymail4Free, XXX All Access Pass.
    Pays weekly via check or ePassporte.

  5. EpicCash

    Nice webcam program (Epiccams) with cool tools. The Epic Mail programs also sell well. Lots of fetish sites in various niches. Pays weekly via check or ePassporte.

  6. Adult Profit

    Lots of sites and options, huge amount of free hosted galleries. Various payout options, including epassporte

  7. Mayor's Money

    Beautiful sites, awesome conversions. Pays by ePassporte.

  8. TopBucks

    Lots of sites, especially reality niche, lots of hosted galleries. Recently added a Video on Demand section, which is very nice. Pays by ePassporte.

  9. NastyDollars

    Lots of reality sites, Captain Stabbin, Mike's Apartment etc. Pays by ePassporte.

  10. Mallcom

    Your very own online adult store, selling everything from dildos to DVDs :)

2: Pick a niche

The first question asked by every new adult webmaster is: which niche sells best? Answer: the one that turns you on. You're going to have to sell this stuff to your visitors, and the only way to do it is to speak to them on their own level. If it excites you, you'll be able to write about it passionately. If for instance you're turned off by gay sex, don't try and sell it: you'll fail.

1: The basics

Forget what you know about marketing and start from scratch. The adult industry differs from mainstream marketing in quite a few ways.
Be prepared to work hard. Especially initially. You need to set up a network of sites, once it's up and running it just requires maintenance.

Tips:

Use blogs
Google likes blogs...it's no coincidence that Google recently bought Blogger.com. I use weblogs extensively. That gives me a lot of targeted search engine traffic. Well-constructed text links work wonders. You'll see many sites with for instance the phrase: "click here to see tight teen pussy"
All very well, but the mistake they make is to link the words "click here"
(Go to google and type in "click here" and you'll see how many results will turn up)
Much better would be to link the words "tight teen pussy", that way the search engines associate the words "tight teen pussy" with your link. Added advantage of linking a phrase rather than a single word: in this example, you get the hits for tight teen pussy, teen pussy, tight pussy, and pussy.

Webcams sell
Everything interactive, in fact. I do very well with webcam sites and dating sites.

NEVER spam
Spam is against the Terms of Service of most sponsors, and also most web-hosts. If they get spam complaints, they'll terminate your account.

Use Dynamic content
Make your content dynamic, if you can. Many sponsors have rotating galleries or pic-of-the-day sites, this gives the impression that your site is updated daily. I also use PHP to dynamically change pics...check out www.sex-startpage.com for an example. (hit reload a couple of times)

Use text-links
People don't really click on banners any more. Rather use a good text-link describing what they'll see if they click. And TELL them to click...surfers are stupid. If you don't tell them to click, they won't :)
A well-constructed text link does 3 things: it piques the surfer's interest, it tells him what to expect from the site, and it tells him what to do.

NEVER steal content
There is no such thing as public domain. Use the free content provided by sponsors. If you really want to buy content, Reyko is very reasonably-priced.
If you don't feel like paying for content, many of the sponsors listed on this site offer free hosted galleries for you to use.

Use .htaccess
I have the following htaccess file on most of my domains:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.domain\.com
rewriterule (.*) http://www.domain.com/$1 [R=permanent,L]
ErrorDocument 400 http://www.sex-startpage.com/
ErrorDocument 401 http://www.sex-startpage.com/
ErrorDocument 403 http://www.sex-startpage.com/
ErrorDocument 404 http://www.sex-startpage.com/
ErrorDocument 500 http://www.sex-startpage.com/

The first part makes domain.com the same as www.domain.com. That way you get the same Google pagerank for domain.com and www.domain.com...it sometimes differs. (of course, you need to substitute "domain.com" with your own domain name)
The second part redirects all my error traffic to www.sex-startpage.com
It's amazing how much traffic you'll retain if you do this, much better than surfers ending up on a standard "page not found" page.
Depending on where I currently want to send my traffic, I regularly change what's on www.sex-startpage.com

Use FPA's
Most sponsors provide you with Full-Page Ads. Instead of linking directly to the site you're trying to sell, it's better to link to a full-page ad for the site. The reason: say you have 10 domains, and on all of them you have links to for instance fuckspy.com. This will cause search engines to associate those links with fuckspy.com, and put it high on the list of search results. It probably already is at the top. When you rather link to the FPA on your own domain, you can then optimise the FPA for the search terms of your own choosing. That means that when a surfer types in "fuckspy", he will see the official fuckspy.com site as first result, and (hopefully) your FPA as the 2nd, or at least on the 1st page. Added advantage: you can put something like "No thanks, take me to www.yourdomain.com" at the bottom, in this way you retain some people who would have just closed the window otherwise.

Customise your FPA's
The FPA's that sponsors provide are usually just one big graphic, like this standard fuckspy FPA. As I said before, it's better to use text-links. Here's my custom fuckspy FPA. Using text rather than graphics, and alt-text on the graphics you DO use, you can now optimise the FPA for search engines, using the keywords of your choice.

Some myths:

TGP sells.
Yes and no. To sell well using TGPs, you're going to have to invest a lot of time and effort: firstly in just learning the TGP biz, secondly in building and submitting galleries on a daily basis. The top TGP people like Sleazydream, The Hun and The Shemp have massive amounts of traffic. The Hun gets a million unique visitors per day. That's more in monthly bandwidth bills than I make in a year. Stands to reason that you have to be really good to still make a profit after that.

Teen is the hottest niche.
The "teen" niche is the hottest, but not because it sells best, just because most adult webmasters promote it. In fact, it's probably the most difficult niche to sell, as it's totally over-saturated.

You need lots of money to start.
I started with nothing. I signed up with a free adult host, using free sponsor galleries, and moved to paid hosting after a month. I never invested a single cent of my own.

You need a dedicated server.
Nonsense. I use a virtual host ( the basic account at www.dreamhost.com: $7.95 per month: 20 GB of diskspace, 1 TB of bandwidth) and it's more than I need for my 40-odd domains.

You need lots of live feeds and need to update your sites with exclusive content regularly.
Live feeds are expensive. I use some free live feeds provided by sponsors, sponsor hosted galleries with their free content, and very little content that I bought. I make money off it, so can you.
